In order for more people to be able to use the services of the Nelson Carshare Co-op, several members of the co-op came up with the idea of offering a micro credit program. They approached the credit union about providing some cash to get the loan program up and running. Doug Stoddart (left) and Tom Atkins of the credit union hand over a cheque to Julia Roberts, Chair of the car co-op. Murray Coell (being interviewed by the media next to Penfold), the Minister of Advanced Education, who came to Castlegar to welcome the first RIC in the province indicated the goal is to have nine chairs throughout the province which will translate into jobs and diversity for young people so their skills can be utilized in the regions where they live. The cards feature scenes specific to each of our branches which have been well received. As a way of marking our 55th Anniversary we gave members an opportunity for 55 days to come in and get their new card for FREE and have their name entered in a draw. The winners from each branch received a panoramic print of the scene on their MemberCard and we also contributed funds to a community group of their choice. Here Deb Nelson (left), Manager - Financial Services, stands with Heather Cooper and daughter Sienna and Stephanie Robinson (far right) of the Rossland Recreation Department, who used the funds for their summer program.

The credit unions in BC, local United Ways and the provincial Ministry of Children and Family Development have banded together to help support this program. In early April the credit union held a bake sale in Nelson to help do some fundraising and with the assistance of matching funds from the government as well as funds raised at the other branches about $650 has been collected. Standing by the bake table are (from left to right) Deb Weiland and Tom Atkins from the credit union, Blair Suffredine, MLA for Nelson-Creston and Kim Adamson a West Kootenay Co-ordinator for Success By 6.

Before you know it summer is behind us and the schools are a flurry of activity following a short recess. Those students that have completed high school and are moving on to post secondary education are also busy adjusting to a new routine, and one of the biggest adjustments is finding a way to pay for that training. Each year the credit union helps out a little in that department by handing out some scholarships. Gordon Player (left) a member of the Board of Directors and Tom Atkins (right) Manager, Program Development & Training presented three scholarships to students at Rossland Secondary School. To Gordon's right are: Sarah Blaskovich, Katrina Ackerman and Ryan Turner. Sarah received the Aspire scholarship, Katrina the Dan Burnett Memorial Scholarship and Ryan the Aaron Allibone Memorial Scholarship.

This year's musical production coming out of the Capitol Theatre's Summer Youth Program is the popular 70's hit Godspell! As in the past few years, a number of youth spend a good portion of their summer diligently working at getting it all together for their time to shine and this year there were over 30 young people who did just that. The performances are always well attended which makes it all worthwhile for those who put so much into it. The credit union passed along their support in the form of a cheque to Marg Stacey, Manager of the theatre. Presenting the cheque is John Malakoff, Chair of the Board of Directors and just behind John is Tom Atkins, Youth Services Administrator at the credit union.

The winter festival is one of the major attractions to the area so the credit union pitched in not only financially but also by serving up some delicious apple juice during the event. Staff and Board Members alike helped out.
Recently, Deb Storey (left) Commercial Services Manager and Tara Keirn (right) Nelson Branch Manager, were able to give Baigalmaa Sanjjav of Mongolia a detailed look at our credit union system.

In Mongolia, Baigalmaa is the Executive Director of the Mongolian Co-operative Training and Information Centre and was able to spend a month in Canada as part of a mentorship program (Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due)set up by the Canadian Co-operative Association about three years ago. The program gives women from developing countries the opportunity to learn how the credit union system works in Canada.

Baigalmaa was in Nelson for about a week and Tara and Deb enjoyed the time they had introducing her to our credit union, food and culture (particularly a hockey game that she was keen on seeing)! She will now be hoping to use the information that she has gained while in Canada to help set up credit unions in the rural areas of Mongolia.

Big Bike for Stroke

"OKAY, EVERYBODY! PILE ON!" Those are the instructions coming from Al Tischer (lower right corner) the ride co-ordinator for the Big Bike for Stroke. The Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC and Yukon uses the big bike as a means of raising funds. They travel around to various communities encouraging groups like Nelson & District Credit Union to put a team of 29 riders together. Each rider needs to try and raise $50 in support for the Heart & Stroke Foundation and then go and have some fun pedaling around town on a most unusual bike. Once Al got our team, the Fat Cats, seated properly, he guided us through the streets of downtown Nelson on his bicycle built for 30. We put a challenge out to other businesses to put a team together and Pacific Insight came through by taking up our challenge. Together we raised more than $5000. After the ride we all got together for a tremendous feed at the credit union. Local businesses who were not able to put a team together supported the event by helping to provide the food and as all the people in the photo can attest – no one went away hungry!

Relay for a Friend - Canadian Cancer Society

For the second year in a row, Nelson & District Credit Union has sponsored two teams for the Canadian Cancer Society's annual 12-hour Relay for a Friend, held at Haley Park in Warfield. The Relay raises funds in support of research into cancer cures. The teams were made up of Nelson & District Credit Union staff, friends and family. Lots of fun was had by all, and $4,500 was raised for the Cancer Society. As well, our teams won the Team Spirit award FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW!!

Team members were required to run, jog, or walk around the track for an hour each, completing 12 continuous hours for each team. The event culminates with the luminary walk. Luminaries can be purchased in memory of someone who has died from cancer, or in honour of cancer survivors. The track is ringed by the luminaries and all participants are given a candle to carry. The combination of the luminaries and the candles is an amazing site and is very moving.
