CU's Maintain Top Customer Service Ranking

TORONTO, Aug. 26 /CNW/ - Despite a year of challenging economic conditions, an independent survey of thousands of Canadians has shown that credit unions rank first in overall quality of customer service among all financial institutions for the sixth year in a row.

"It is gratifying that Canadians continue to feel valued and well served by their local credit unions," said David Phillips, president and CEO of Credit Union Central of Canada (Canadian Central).

"Canadian credit unions have more than five million members because of the keen focus on customer service at the community level," Phillips said. "Meeting the needs of our members continues to be our priority in any economic environment."

Global market research firm Synovate announced its 2010 Best Banking Awards, which are derived from its Customer Service Index. It found that credit unions received top honors among all financial institutions in five of the same award categories as they did in 2009. In three categories, credit unions stood alone:

    - Overall Customer Service Excellence
    - Values My Business
    - Branch Service Excellence

Credit unions also tied for first in the following categories:

    - Financial Planning & Advice
    - Telephone Banking Excellence

Changes to Global Payment MasterCard Acceptance at US and International ATMs

A recent change with one of our 3rd party service providers has resulted in our Global Payment MasterCard no longer being accepted at US and International ATMs.

Effective immediately, your NDCU Membercard (debit card) is the only card you will be able to use to withdraw funds at a US or International ATM displaying the CIRRUS symbol. Your Global Payment MasterCard will continue to be accepted as a MasterCard at retail outlets for purchases throughout Canada and around the world.

Should you not have a NDCU Membercard, we strongly encourage you to obtain one to maintain access to US and International ATMs.

For more information on these recent changes, please contact your local branch.

Financial planning 101 for new grads

Diploma in hand, you're ready to take on the world. So what's your plan? Or, more to the point, your financial plan?

Graduation is the launching point for an array of life-changing decisions and firsts. Whether it's a new career, car, marriage, house or just a whole lot of fun, there's planning to be done on the financial front.

"Almost every decision you're making has a dollar value attached to it," says Ann Bowman, vice-president of communications and corporate relations of the Financial Planners Standards Council. "I would absolutely encourage a graduating student to learn as much as they can about basic financial planning concepts."
Financial planners open doors

With a lifetime of opportunity before them, now is the perfect time for graduates to team up with a financial planner and start plotting their future.

But aren't financial experts just for people with money? Who'd want to take on a young person with little income or a pile of student loan debt?

"That is one of the misconceptions that our body is battling," admits Bowman, adding there's a financial planner out there for everyone. "There are many Certified Financial Planner professionals who are looking for that next generation of individuals who are about to enter the next stage of their life."

"It's never too early," stresses Jeanette Brox, a Certified Financial Planner, or CFP, professional with Investors Group in North York, Ont. She understands how overwhelming it can be for graduates, especially when they're drowning in debt, and says a financial planner can put things into perspective by encouraging them to define short- and long-term goals and helping map a path to reach those goals.
It's not just about saving for retirement In other words, it's not all about forgoing fun in favour of planning for retirement, which can seem a long way off when you're just starting a career.

"It encompasses so much more and is of broader value to those who understand the scope of financial planning," says Bowman.
"Most of financial planning is about investor performance," says Bradley Roulston, a CFP professional with in Nelson, B.C., adding that too much emphasis is placed on investment or product performance. "Getting into the right habits when you're younger is so much easier than changing habits when you're older."
And the major asset that young people have is time. A financial planner will help you look at the big picture and show you how you can save a bit of money and pay off debts at the same time.

The B word
"If you use time effectively, you can achieve all your goals," says Roulston, who regularly speaks with students at high schools and universities about financial issues.

He's a big advocate of sticking to a monthly budget that allows you to have some fun while saving. It's OK to start small -- thanks to compound interest, even saving $25 a month has a lot of potential to grow when you begin squirreling it away from the age of 22.

An important step is to take a hard look at where your money goes and decide where to curtail your expenses. Doing this from the outset will serve you well your entire life.

"You're empowered, you're in control of your budget," says Roulston, who advocates an old-fashioned approach to getting what you want: saving. Two generations ago, people actually put aside between 10 percent and 20 percent of their income for a rainy day. Today's nest eggs usually come in the form of a line of credit. "Canadians spend three percent more than what they make, and (spending) is rising."

If you can put aside 10 percent of your income and, once that income rises, live as though you're earning $10,000 less, your nest egg will flourish.

Student loan debt
Admittedly, saving for the future can be the furthest thing from one's mind when finishing university a daunting $40,000 in debt. If it makes you feel any better, experts say not to despair about student loans.

"People need to understand that this is not such a bad form of debt," says Brox, pointing out that a student loan is essentially an investment in your future.
Roulston agrees, further advising against consolidating student loans with banks, even when they offer a lower rate of interest. "There are all sorts of benefits if you keep it with the government," he says, pointing to tax credits on interest paid, interest relief options and loan forgiveness.

Watch out for the loan ranger
Instead of obsessing about student loans, graduates should pay off other forms of debt with higher interest, such as credit cards. While credit cards offer convenience, there's no reason for graduates to have more than one credit card. Credit cards have notoriously high rates of interest and balances should be paid in full each month.

One of Roulston's primary messages is to avoid sinking into debt. "Debt equals slavery," he says, acknowledging that living debt-free can be a challenge in a society consumed by consuming. He especially hates to see people going into debt to buy an automobile and advises living without one by instead using transit or joining a car co-op. If a car is a must-have, he recommends buying "one that's a couple of years old -- let someone else take the depreciation hit, and run it into the ground."

Another temptation is to rush into buying a first home and biting off more than you can chew. Roulston isn't a fan of the 40-year mortgage simply because of the amount of interest you end up paying over its lifetime. He suggests getting into the market early by purchasing a duplex or triplex with other like-minded friends or family members. Instead of overextending yourself for a $400,000 home, you take on $200,000 of a $600,000 property and get your foot in the door.

How to find a planner
If you're in need of a planner, a first step is to ask for referrals from family and friends. While the knee-jerk reaction might be to sign on with the first person willing to take you on as a client, don't. What you're hoping for is a long-term relationship and that takes research. It's OK to interview a number of people in your quest for the right fit.

Of course, financial advisers have to be paid and there are generally two routes to consider: an annual fee or via commission (based on the products, such as mutual funds, that they sell you). The commission route tends to appeal to those with more limited resources.

Experts agree that for recent grads, mapping your financial future is an intricate part of an overall life plan. Laying the foundation for a bright future is about starting early; in other words, don't be afraid to ask for help, even if your liabilities far outweigh your assets. With the right plan, it won't always be that way.

B.C. Credit Unions Post Earnings of $261 Million in 2007

May 1, 2008 - 08:004

B.C. Credit Unions Post Earnings of $261 Million in 2007

VANCOUVER -- B.C. credit unions earned $261 million before taxes and dividends last year, Credit Union Central of British Columbia announced today.

That marks a modest gain over the 2006 result of $260 million.

The system's combined assets grew by 9.5 per cent to $42.6 billion at year-end.

"B.C. credit unions enjoyed another solid year in 2007," said Don Rolfe, Central's President and Chief Executive Officer. "With the strength in the province's domestic economy, particularly the housing sector, credit unions saw continued growth in loans to home-buyers and businesses."

Housing markets continued to be strong in most regions of B.C., and the residential mortgage portfolio grew by 10.1 per cent to $25 billion, amounting to 68 per cent of total loans.

Loans to businesses grew by 15.3 per cent to $9.1 billion, representing nearly 25 per cent of the lending portfolio.

Loan delinquency remained at very low levels, with loans in arrears more than 90 days amounting to just 0.21 per cent of total loan value.

Members' deposits grew by 7.9 per cent to $36.3 billion.

B.C. credit unions are owned by their 1.6 million members, who received $39 million in dividends and patronage rebates last year.

There are 48 credit unions in B.C., operating from 368 locations in 140 communities, including 41 that have no other financial institution. They are governed by local boards of directors, elected on a one-member, one-vote basis. The B.C. credit union system employs more than 8,000 British Columbians.

2008 Budget Highlights

A Few Highlights from the 2008 Federal Budget
Bradley Roulston, CFP

Tax-Free Savings Account

Undoubtedly, the biggest treat for investors in the 2008 federal budget was the introduction of a new savings vehicle that will allow Canadians to save money, not just for retirement but for any purpose, on a completely tax-exempt basis.

Starting in 2009, Canadians who are at least 18 years old will be able to contribute to a Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA). Contribution room is $5,000 (indexed annually), will be cumulative and will be allowed to be carried forward indefinitely. For instance, if your contribution was only $2,000 in 2009, you can contribute $8,000 in 2010 ($3,000 carry-forward plus $5,000 of new room). Unlike the RRSP system, any amounts withdrawn will be automatically added to your TFSA contribution room. However, be careful not to over-contribute as excess contributions will be taxed at 1% per month.

Unlike RRSPs, but similar to RESPs, contributions to a TFSA will not be tax-deductible from income. The big advantage is that any income and gains on investments held within a TFSA won't be taxed either while inside the TFSA or upon ultimate withdrawal. Further, since withdrawals are not considered income, they will have no impact on government befits or credits such as GIS, OAS on the Canada Child Tax Benefit or the Goods and Services Tax Credit.

Since income earned inside the TFSA along with withdrawals are non-taxable, you won't be able to write off any interest expense on funds borrowed for the purpose of investing in a TFSA (similar to RRSPs). However, unlike RRSPs, you can use TFSA assets as collateral, which may facilitate investors in obtaining secured credit at more favourable rates. Income splitting is allowed as attribution rules do not apply to any income or gains earned in the TFSA derived from a spouse or partner's contributions.

Assuming that you have limited funds and choosing between the TFSA or RRSP... While both are meant to be tax-neutral, RRSPs will make more sense if your tax rate is lower when you take the money out (I.e. retirement). Both vehicles work best when years of compounding interest are able to occur. People might be inclined to withdrawal money from their TFSA more regularly, hence sacrificing their retirement income. Other critics believe that the TFSAs are likely to be utilized more by middle and upper income earners.

Dividend Tax Credit

In response to the reduction in corporate tax rates from 19% in 2008 to 15% in 2012, the dividend gross-up factor and the dividend tax credit for eligible dividends will be reduced. By 2012, an eligible dividend will be gross-up by 38% (compared to 45% currently) and the dividend tax credit will be reduced to 15% from the current level of 19%. These changes will increase the effective federal tax rate on eligible dividends from 14.55% to 19.29% by 2012.

Depreciation

The manufacturing and process sector also received extended capital cost allowance treatment for investment in machinery and equipment. The accelerated depreciation that was introduced in the 2007 budget and which applied to investments made within a two year horizon has now been extended out to include investments made up to the end of 2011. For the first additional year, a 50% straight-line accelerated CCA treatment will apply, but for 2010-11, an accelerated treatment will be provided on a declining basis.

Celebrating Co-op Week

A co-operative (co-op) is a jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprise by its members. BC has one of the most vibrant co-op movements in Canada with one in three people being members. Co-ops in BC started in the early 1900s largely through the formation of consumer co-ops that provided affordable quality goods as an alternative to company stores in mining communities. Today there are over 700 co-ops in BC, Nelson area has over 20 of them. Some of the more popular co-ops are Credit Unions and Mountain Equipment Co-op.

Co-ops can be businesses offering products or services to their members, social enterprising providing necessities as housing or employment or public services like healthcare or client care.

Co-ops are not necessarily driven by profit, being member-run; their desire is to bring fairness, equity and justice to the marketplace. Through their tradition of self-help and mutual aid, co-ops have made a major contribution to the development and stability of BC communities.

Here in the Nelson area, a regional co-op is forming to best serve the interests of local residents by sharing resources, experience and planning. It is the first of its kind in BC to form!

All co-ops in the world are based on a set of principles
1)	Voluntary and Open membership
2)	Democratic Member Control
3)	Member Economic Participation
4)	Autonomy and Independence
5)	Education, Training and Information
6)	Co-operation among Co-operatives
7)	Concern for Community

Co-op week celebrations began in Canada in 1981 in the Maritimes and Saskatchewan. In 1982, the celebration went national with the encouragement of the Co-operative Union of Canada (predecessor of the Canadian Co-operative Association). Co-op week is a celebration of people working together and sharing.

Trekking the high road

Align your investments with your values and put your money where your heart is!

Social Responsible Investing is nothing more than integrating your values and social concerns into your investments decisions. Social Responsible Investments (SRIs) are normally considered as mutual funds that only buy stocks in companies that are socially responsible. Over the past 15 years the amount of assets invested in SRIs have grown exponentially!

However, Nelson & District Credit Union term deposits are even more socially responsible since your money will be reinvested back into our own local economy and abide by our highest lending standards.

You might have concerns over the nature of a business, environmental practices, labour issues, human rights, animal rights or community relations. Why not speak through your investment decisions?

One should not have to sacrifice returns for ethics. Companies that exhibit diligence, prudence and responsibility for long-term social and environmental advancement are far more likely to succeed. For example, a company with a good environmental track record - saving money through good waste management, less litigation and speedy government approval will be more profitable. There are rewards for good behavior! Nothing speaks as loudly to government & corporations than where you spend and invest your money.

As investment fund advisors, we are able to access all major mutual funds - including SRIs and naturally to our term deposits.
With good planning, we ensure that your portfolio is in-line with achieving your viewpoints.

The Nelson Carshare Co-op Expands Services

In order for more people to be able to use the services of the Nelson Carshare Co-op, several members of the co-op came up with the idea of offering a micro credit program. They approached the credit union about providing some cash to get the loan program up and running. Doug Stoddart (left) and Tom Atkins of the credit union hand over a cheque to Julia Roberts, Chair of the car co-op. The loans enable people to become members of the car co-op in Nelson and to enjoy the benefits of full membership right away.

George Penfold (far left) has been appointed by Selkirk College as the first Regional Innovation Chair in Rural Economic Development for the West Kootenay/Boundary region. Murray Coell (being interviewed by the media next to Penfold), the Minister of Advanced Education, who came to Castlegar to welcome the first RIC in the province indicated the goal is to have nine chairs throughout the province which will translate into jobs and diversity for young people so their skills can be utilized in the regions where they live. It took $2.5 million to get the program going with half of that coming from the private sector and local government sources. Nelson & District Credit Union contributed a dollar and a half per member to show their support for economic development in our area!

Earlier in the year Nelson & District Credit Union designed and produced a series of special edition MemberCards. The cards feature scenes specific to each of our branches which have been well received. As a way of marking our 55th Anniversary we gave members an opportunity for 55 days to come in and get their new card for FREE and have their name entered in a draw. The winners from each branch received a panoramic print of the scene on their MemberCard and we also contributed funds to a community group of their choice. Here Deb Nelson (left), Manager - Financial Services, stands with Heather Cooper and daughter Sienna and Stephanie Robinson (far right) of the Rossland Recreation Department, who used the funds for their summer program.

For more than 20 years, independent photographer Fred Rosenberg has been capturing people out and about on the streets of Nelson. Though Fred's work has been featured in many different shows and displays in our province, he has also been trying to establish a permanent collection at the Nelson Museum. With the help of the credit union, Fred was able to produce over two dozen photographs that he recently presented to Leah Best, Executive Director of the museum. Be sure to ask to see the collection the next time you stop by the museum!

Success By 6 is an initiative dedicated to ensuring that children between the ages of 0 and 6 have access to programs and services that support their healthy growth and development. The credit unions in BC, local United Ways and the provincial Ministry of Children and Family Development have banded together to help support this program. In early April the credit union held a bake sale in Nelson to help do some fundraising and with the assistance of matching funds from the government as well as funds raised at the other branches about $650 has been collected. Standing by the bake table are (from left to right) Deb Weiland and Tom Atkins from the credit union, Blair Suffredine, MLA for Nelson-Creston and Kim Adamson a West Kootenay Co-ordinator for Success By 6.

Before (from left to right) Virg, Janine, Karlene, Elke, Dom, Eva, Mary, Tera, Candace and Deb could wrap the presents, they had to select a request that had been placed on a Christmas tree at the Kootenai Moon Wicker and Rattan store on Baker Street, and then go out to see if they could find the item and purchase it. The Credit Union Wellness Team supplied the funds for the purchases and more than 20 gifts were delivered to the transition house!

Before you know it summer is behind us and the schools are a flurry of activity following a short recess. Those students that have completed high school and are moving on to post secondary education are also busy adjusting to a new routine, and one of the biggest adjustments is finding a way to pay for that training. Each year the credit union helps out a little in that department by handing out some scholarships. Gordon Player (left) a member of the Board of Directors and Tom Atkins (right) Manager, Program Development & Training presented three scholarships to students at Rossland Secondary School. To Gordon's right are: Sarah Blaskovich, Katrina Ackerman and Ryan Turner. Sarah received the Aspire scholarship, Katrina the Dan Burnett Memorial Scholarship and Ryan the Aaron Allibone Memorial Scholarship.

This year's musical production coming out of the Capitol Theatre's Summer Youth Program is the popular 70's hit Godspell! As in the past few years, a number of youth spend a good portion of their summer diligently working at getting it all together for their time to shine and this year there were over 30 young people who did just that. The performances are always well attended which makes it all worthwhile for those who put so much into it. The credit union passed along their support in the form of a cheque to Marg Stacey, Manager of the theatre. Presenting the cheque is John Malakoff, Chair of the Board of Directors and just behind John is Tom Atkins, Youth Services Administrator at the credit union.

As everyone well remembers, it was a hot, dry summer - a summer that created a lot of devastation in the way of forest fires. To help support the relief efforts of the Canadian Red Cross, the Wealth Management & Financial Services departments contributed 25% of the credit union's casual jeans day fund to Shirley McCracken (seated front right)a volunteer with the Red Cross. Presenting the cheque to Shirley are (from left to right) Lori, Tara, Nancy, Brian, Deb, Katie, Tom, Vivi and Dave.

Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due

Recently, Deb Storey (left) Commercial Services Manager and Tara Keirn (right) Nelson Branch Manager, were able to give Baigalmaa Sanjjav of Mongolia a detailed look at our credit union system.

In Mongolia, Baigalmaa is the Executive Director of the Mongolian Co-operative Training and Information Centre and was able to spend a month in Canada as part of a mentorship program (Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due)set up by the Canadian Co-operative Association about three years ago. The program gives women from developing countries the opportunity to learn how the credit union system works in Canada.

Baigalmaa was in Nelson for about a week and Tara and Deb enjoyed the time they had introducing her to our credit union, food and culture (particularly a hockey game that she was keen on seeing)! She will now be hoping to use the information that she has gained while in Canada to help set up credit unions in the rural areas of Mongolia.

By all accounts the Nelson Free Ride Jam was an exciting weekend for a group of young cycling enthusiasts. The weather pattern continued to hold steady over the Kootenays. The skies remained clear, the sun hot and with little or no wind, dust clouds lay suspended above the mountain trails the entire weekend as riders ripped it up. Tom Atkins (third from left) Student & Youth Services Representative at the credit union presented a term deposit to Jason Manning (second from right)as part of the financial organization's involvement in the event.

Candace and Lori (middle, left to right) of the credit union present a cheque to Chris Armstrong, along with son Aiden and Al Krause of Nelson Search & Rescue. The cheque was used to help purchase the Cascade Rescue Tobaggan and the litter wheel that it is attached to in the photo. Naturally it's equipment that we hope they never have to use but if they do it should give the Initial Response Team a little more flexibility when transporting the injured from difficult terrain.

Dagmar Swift (on left) Fundraising Chair of the Nelson Branch of the B.C. SPCA, accepts a cheque from Bernie, Lois, Mary, Suzanne, Janine, Sue and Elke of the credit union. Every three months a department within the credit union selects which charity will receive the proceeds from the Jeans Day PayDay Pool. The staff in the photo all work on the first floor of the Vernon Street office. At first glance it may appear as though there is only one dog in the photo, but there are actually two, Pebbles and Cookie, (can you "spot" them). We are not certain of this but it is possible they are playing a game of "copy cat" as they pose for the camera.

Big Bike for Stroke

"OKAY, EVERYBODY! PILE ON!" Those are the instructions coming from Al Tischer (lower right corner) the ride co-ordinator for the Big Bike for Stroke. The Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC and Yukon uses the big bike as a means of raising funds. They travel around to various communities encouraging groups like Nelson & District Credit Union to put a team of 29 riders together. Each rider needs to try and raise $50 in support for the Heart & Stroke Foundation and then go and have some fun pedaling around town on a most unusual bike. Once Al got our team, the Fat Cats, seated properly, he guided us through the streets of downtown Nelson on his bicycle built for 30. We put a challenge out to other businesses to put a team together and Pacific Insight came through by taking up our challenge. Together we raised more than $5000. After the ride we all got together for a tremendous feed at the credit union. Local businesses who were not able to put a team together supported the event by helping to provide the food and as all the people in the photo can attest – no one went away hungry!

Relay for a Friend - Canadian Cancer Society

For the second year in a row, Nelson & District Credit Union has sponsored two teams for the Canadian Cancer Society's annual 12-hour Relay for a Friend, held at Haley Park in Warfield. The Relay raises funds in support of research into cancer cures. The teams were made up of Nelson & District Credit Union staff, friends and family. Lots of fun was had by all, and $4,500 was raised for the Cancer Society. As well, our teams won the Team Spirit award FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW!!

Team members were required to run, jog, or walk around the track for an hour each, completing 12 continuous hours for each team. The event culminates with the luminary walk. Luminaries can be purchased in memory of someone who has died from cancer, or in honour of cancer survivors. The track is ringed by the luminaries and all participants are given a candle to carry. The combination of the luminaries and the candles is an amazing site and is very moving.
